Obituary and Memoirs History

We have begun a project to post the complete Honor Roll online.  The Honor Roll consists of the list of those members of the Louisiana Conference that have passed away.  In each Annual Conference Journal, obituaries (called memoirs) of those who passed away the previous year are included.  For a number of years now, memoirs of clergy spouses have been included as well.  The Honor Roll database will contain records listing each person, some statistical information, and a link to their memoir web page.

Though this idea has been on a list of 'things to do,' Rev. Jimmie Caraway volunteered to began transcribing memoirs from recent decades is is soliciting help from other pastors.  The years that are being worked on or are completed are listed below.  We also added the 1970 Honor Roll data, which listed clergy that passed away between 1847 and 1970.  Although you will find a web page link in those records, they will not work until someone volunteers to transcribe them for us.

If you would like to volunteer to transcribe memoirs for us, please check dates below to see what years/Journals are already being transcribed.  Memoirs are located in the Conference Journal, printed each year after Annual Conference.  Your local church probably has older copies of the Journal.

The Archives at Centenary College has a complete set of Journals for the United Methodist Church, the Methodist Church Conference A, and the Methodist Episcopal Church, South.  Dillard University has Journals from the Methodist Church Conference B and the Methodist Episcopal Church, North.  There are other Journals for different Methodist bodies (such as the Methodist Protestant Church and EUB).  The Archives has some of these, but not a complete set.  Assistance in obtaining Memoirs from those other Methodist denominations would be appreciated.  If you do not have access to the Journals but would still like to do transcriptions, contact us and we can send you photocopies of  Memoirs.

The Journals for the Methodist Episcopal Church, South go back to 1847.  The Journals for the Methodist Episcopal Church, North go back to 1866.

If you have a photo of a pastor (and his/her page does not have one), please contact us about submitting a copy.
Please send an email to Webmaster stating your name, email addresses, and the years (and titles) of the journals you'd like to transcribe.
