Willie Robertson Lafayette, Sr.

| After an extended illness, Willie Robertson Lafayette entered into eternal life on January 6, 2001. Rev. Lafayette was born December 17, 1919 to the late Agnes Brasell and Leon Lafayette. Very early in his life he professed a love for Jesus and in 1938 was baptized at Royal Oak Baptist Church in Torras, Louisiana where the Rev. W. M. Bibbins served as pastor. Rev. Willie Lafayette excelled at everything he attempted, and rose to the rank of Sergeant in the United States Army. He also worked for thirty years for the Kansas City Railroad and retired as a foreman. His love for God was always a driving force in his life. This love gave him the courage and commitment to answer the call to serve God’s people as a Methodist minister. Rev. Lafayette served from 1954 to 1996 in the following appointments: Lobdell Ct., St. Peter Ct., Donaldsonville Ct., Denham Springs Ct., Angie-Live Oak Ct., Jordan-LeJeune Ct., Clinton: Mt. Zion-St. Paul, and Beachgrove-Moses Chapel United Methodist Churches. After two previous attempts to retire, he ceased active ministry in 1996. Rev. Lafayette was married to the late Thelma Howard Lafayette. To this union four children were born, Diane Lafayette (Qaadir) of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Willie Lafayette of Zachary, Louisiana, Agnese Elayne Lafayette of Compton, California, and Esther Kay Lafayette Watkins of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He leaves to cherish his memory, his aunt, Mrs. Jannie Armstrong of Lettsworth, Louisiana; brother, Herman Lafayette; sisters, Mrs. Genevia Barnes of Little Rock, Arkansas; Mrs. Irma Ross and Beulah Pullett of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Also, he will be deeply remembered by his sisters-in-law, Mrs. Ora Williams, Mrs. Karen Lafayette and Mrs. Bessie Lafayette; brother-in-law, Mr. James Ross; and son-in-law, Mr. Willie D. Watkins. To continue his legacy he entrusts a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors and friends. Rev. Lafayette was preceded in death by his parents, Agnes and Leon; wife, Thelma, brothers, Acie Lafayette and Leon Lafayette, beloved aunts, uncles, and cousins. “Servant of God, well done! Thy glorious warfare’s past. The battle’s fought, the race is won; and thou art crowned at last.” |
