JACKIE “JACK” DEAN PHELPS
January 11, 1935 – August 25, 2018
Jackie “Jack” Dean Phelps was born January 11, 1935, in Jennings, Louisiana, and passed away Saturday, August 25, 2018, at Avalon Place in Monroe, Louisiana. He was a graduate of Jennings High School, Jennings, LA, Southwestern Louisiana Institute, Lafayette, LA, Perkins School of Theology, SMU, Dallas, TX, and St. Paul’s School of Theology (Methodist) in Kansas City, MO, where he received his Master of Divinity. Jack served churches in the Methodist Conferences in Mississippi, Texas, Missouri, and Louisiana and the Presbyterian Faith at Graceminster and Covenant churches in Monroe. Jack was a United States Army National Guard veteran serving during the Korean Conflict.
Survivors include his wife, Sherry Wilson Phelps; son, Joel David Phelps (Stacy) of Summerville, South Carolina; daughters, Kimberly Taylor Hartt and Alison Taylor DeRouen both of Monroe, Louisiana; brother, James Phelps (Karen) of Medical Lake, Washington; sister, Myrt Garrett (Al) of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; brother-in-law, Mark Wilson (Gail) of Monroe, Louisiana; grandchildren, Saige Phelps (Kelly), Jaiden Phelps, Maisy Phelps, Lauren Hartt, Sara DeRouen, Zack DeRouen, and Olivia DeRouen; great-grandson, Emmett Cantrell; and several nieces and nephews.
Jack loved and faithfully served his God and Church. He and Sherry served side by side for over 30 years. Jack could always talk to you about airplanes and golf, his two favorite pastimes. His favorite song was “His Eye is on the Sparrow”, because he knew that God cared and was always watching over him.
