David Barret Peabody Ph.D., Professor Emeritus of Religion at Nebraska Wesleyan University died unexpectedly on June 27, 2018 in Lincoln, NE at the age of 71.

David earned his B.A., Master of Theology and doctorate degrees at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX where he was a varsity swimmer. He was ordained as an elder in the United Methodist Church in the Louisiana Conference in 1972. He served as a pastor in churches in Louisiana and Texas prior to returning for his doctorate. His teaching career at Nebraska Wesleyan spanned from 1984-2016. He was an internationally known New Testament scholar and was inducted as a fellow into the Studiorium Novi Testamenti Society in Europe in 1988. He published four books with a research group that studied the Synoptics and contributed more than 20 articles to New Testament journals. Grandchildren knew him as Pa and everyone knew him by his enormous laugh and even larger heart. He was also: a lover of the theatre, an international traveler, a member of the First Presbyterian Chancel Choir and Lincoln Senior Chorus, led an Adult Academic Sunday school class as First Plymouth Church, and longstanding volunteer at Clinic with a Heart.

David is survived by wife Jeri Brandt, daughter Nicole Hultgren (Brian) of Jacksonville, FL; sister Beth Wortley of Dallas, TX, step daughters, Sarah Brandt and Kari Hoeft (Tom), 7 grandchildren and niece (Erin) and nephew (Kevin). 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Franklin and Elizabeth Peabody of Dallas TX
