Rev. J. W Thompson was born to Joseph and Laura Thompson in Jeanerette1 La., October 26, 1883. He received his education in the public schools of that city, at Gilbert Academy, New Orleans University and Gammon Theological Seminary. Rev. Thompson entered the ministry in 1897, serving in the Louisiana Conference until his death On January 15, 1907, he married Florence A. Smith, which marriage was blessed with four children, all of whom have graduated from Gilbert Academy and New Orleans University, the youngest son having received his degree from Xavier University. Three of the children have done a year or more of study beyond the Bachelor Degree. Two children, Thirkield and Myrtle are teaching in Cincinnati, Ruth teaches in New Orleans and Lloyd is coach at Franklinto7n Training School, Franklinton, La.
Mrs. Thompson passed to her reward February 24, 1926. On November 8, 1932 (?) Rev. Thompson married Mrs. Sylvania Fields. herself a minister’s widow, and together they continued the work of the church.
Rev. Thompson was known as a stirring evangelist, a wonderful Organizer and financier. During his ministry, he built several churches and parsonages, decreased church debts, and saved hundreds of souls unto Christ. His work being done, he departed this life November 27, 1938.
