Noel Gains, Jr. was born December 21, 1922, in Crown Point, Louisiana. After attending Delgado Junior College and Southern University, he completed his pastoral Course of Study at Perkins School of Theology in 1973. He joined the Methodist Church in 1967. His first pastoral charge, in 1968, was St. James Methodist Church, Hahnville, and Ninde Chapel at LaPlace, Louisiana. He was sent to St. Phillip Methodist Church, New Orleans, in 1969, and in 1972 was assigned to Asbury United Methodist Church, where he remained until his death, January 12, 1975. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Polly Johnson Gaines, and his children, Noel Gaines III, Los Angeles, California, and Calvin, Terry, Florence and JoAnn Gaines, New Orleans, Louisiana. He was the son of the late Noel Gaines, Sr., and Mrs. Rachel Jackson Gaines; step-father of Sidney Wyche III and Mrs. Beltine Tucker; grandfather of Carol Wyche; brother of Bernell Proctor, Los Angeles, California, and Mrs. Dorothy Crenshaw, Sterling. Rev. Gaines was very active with the Boy Scouts and other youth groups on the Westside. Funeral services were conducted by Dr. Alfred L. Norris, Sr., District Superintendent of the New Orleans District, from the Asbury United Methodist Church with burial in West Lawn Cemetery, Gretna, Louisiana. “God call our loved ones But we lose not wholly— What he hath given; They live on Earth, in thought and deed As truly as in His Heaven.” Whittier |
