Mattie Grant Smith was born to the late Calbe and Julia Gant on November 17, 1885, in Marthaville, Louisiana, the second of their three children. She was reared and received her early educational experience in the Marthaville area. At an early age, she joined the Union Methodist Church of Marthaville. After moving to Mansfield, Louisiana, she subsequently united with Wesley Methodist Church, where she retained her membership until death. Sister Smith was a devout Christian, who loved the Lord and exemplified His teachings. She worked dutifully in the church and community until her health began to fail her: On April 11, 1918, Mattie Gant married the late Reverend C. C. Smith. To this union was born three daughters, one of whom, Lula Mae Smith Norris, preceded her in death. As a young adult Sis Smith enjoyed working as a schoolteacher and also in the farming of cattle and vegetables. On Friday, July 22, 1983, the master of the Harvest gathered with His crop, Sister Mattie Melissa Grant Smith. In so doing, God’s earthly vineyard lost a dedicate laborer and the community of mankind a true friend. She leaves to cherish her memory, two daughters, Neola Smith Bush of Many, Louisiana and Julia Smith Bradford of Shreveport, Louisiana; one sister, Leanna Gant Jacobs of Catuna, Louisiana, one son-in-law, Francis Bush of Many, Louisiana; seven grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree: he shall grow like cedar in Lebanon. Those that be planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of our God. They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing... Psalm 92:12-14 |
