Miller, William Joseph

Psalm 23:4 Reverend William Joseph Miller was born on October 11, 1938 in Lake Charles, Louisiana. He departed this life on Wednesday, March 27, 2002 at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. William was the second child born to the union of the Reverend William Miller and the late Mrs. Janie Purdy Miller. He accepted Christ as his Savior at an early age and was baptized by the late Reverend Walter Moore at the Evergreen Baptist Church in Lake Charles, Louisiana. He attended the public schools of Calcasieu Parish. He furthered his education at Dillard University where he accepted his calling to the ministry on Career Day and earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1961. He also received a Certificate of Attainment from the Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University. He did further studies at the Episcopal Seminary of the Southwest, the University of Texas, and the New Orleans Baptist Seminary. William married the former Gwendolyn Woods. Added to this union were four children: Willie Joseph, Daryl Alexander, Keith Anthony, and Debra Michelle. Reverend Miller pastored the Hughes United Methodist Church for the past 33 years. Under his administration the present edifice was constructed. He was an Ordained Elder in the United Methodist Church, a member of the Louisiana Annual Conference, and served on various committees in the United Methodist Conference. Reverend Miller served Hughes and the surrounding community faithfully through programs such as Baton Rouge Recreation and Parks Commission summer programs for youth, a church daycare center, assistance to remodel homes for the elderly, and he taught adolescents in the school system at Greenwell Springs Hospital. He was affectionately known by his family and friends as “Mr. Bill,” “Grandpa,” “W.J.,” “Dub,” “Bro,” and “Rev.” He leaves to cherish his memory a loving wife, Gwendolyn W. Miller; a devoted father, Reverend Wm. Miller; two sons: Willie J. Miller, III and Keith A. Miller; one daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Thomas Borskey; two grandsons: Desmond A. Miller and Kylan A. Borskey; one brother, Charles Miller (Juanita); two sisters: Ruth M. Green (Henry) and Lois A. Miller; seven aunts: Beatrice Dixon, Alma Southwell, Gloria Moore, Daisy Cooper, Alice Williams, Betty Miller, and Mae Purdy; a mother-in-law, Mary E. Williams; three sisters-in-law: Tommye McCants, Patricia Tinsley and Mona Williams; three brothers-in-law: Charles Williams, Alfred Williams (Mary Joyce) and Ray Williams (Janet); one godchild, Nora L. Henderson; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Janie Purdy Miller; brother, James Harold Miller; and son, Daryl A. Miller |
