Alverson, Donice Watson

Donice Watson Alverson passed away on Thursday, January 26, 2006, in Gonzales, Louisiana after having evacuated from the family home in New Orleans, Louisiana because of Hurricane Katrina.
Rev. Alverson was born July 16, 1919 to the Rev. Lonnie Gordon and Bessie Eleanor Alverson. After obtaining a B.S. degree and working as an educator, her served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, then earned a Bachelor of Divinity degree from Candler School of Theology, Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia. He began serving churches in the Louisiana Methodist Conference in 1948. He was pastor of Napoleon Avenue Methodist Church from 1956-1968, and of Lake Vista United Methodist Church from 1972-1987. He served as the Protestant Chaplain at Southern Baptist Hospital and was a mentor to theology students and young clergy. He was a member of the first group of ministers and counselors whose sessions developed into the Department of Pastoral Care at Baptist Hospital, a center which provided counseling services and certified training in Clinical Pastoral Education.
Rev. Alverson is the husband of Jewell West Alverson, father of Donice and Margaret Alverson, father-in-law of Bowdre Banks and Tim Meche, grandfather of Donice, Bowdre, Chesley and Elizabeth Alverson-Banks and Rhone and Jude Meche. He is the brother of Robert Alverson , Mirial Lowe, the late Gordon and Hugh Warren Alverson and Ruth Alverson McNutt.
