MYRTLE LOUISE ATKINS SMITH
SEPTEMBER 18, 1924 – JANUARY 26, 2012
 
Myrtle Louise Atkins Smith was born in Kingston, Jamaica on September 18, 1924. She peacefully entered into eternal rest on January 26, 2012 at the age of 87.
Myrtle obtained her early education in the Kingston Public School System during the 1930’s. Afterwards she attended Fisk University where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics. She later earned a Master’s in Mathematics at Purdue University. In 1974she earned a Doctorate in Mathematics from the University of Pittsburgh. She met and married the late Rev. Bernard R. Smith in June 1959. From this union was born one son, Michael George, on November 13, 1961
Myrtle’s professional career in teaching led her to Southern University at New Orleans where she retired after rendering 33 years of service. She was then led to St. Augustine High School, where she taught for 7 years and Delgado Junior College part-time.
Myrtle joined Boynton United Methodist Church, where she also served as the former First Lady for 12 years under the pastorship of her late husband. She also served as a Communion Steward and Sunday School Teacher. She was also a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. To all who knew her, Myrtle was a caring and generous person. She cherished her family and the time she spent with them. She left an indelible mark on the hearts of everyone she touched especially her many students.
As the sunset on the earthly life of Myrtle, faith and hope in God assures that she is now present with the Lord. Today and thereafter, her family celebrates her life. Left with cherished memories includes her only son, Michael George; grandchildren Bernard R. and Raychell R.; daughter-in-law, Yolanda B. Smith; one sister, Vashti Todd; nephews: Locksley Todd, Hopeton Todd, (late) Donovan Todd, and (late) Glen Todd; and a host of loving friends, church members and her pet dog Snowball.
