World Communion Sunday, October 6

“In remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ’s offering for us.” — The Great Thanksgiving.
In The United Methodist Church, World Communion Sunday is one of six Special Sunday offerings.
On October 6, our designated gifts benefit students around the world by providing scholarships, mentoring and training.
As we come together to receive Holy Communion with Christians around the world, we recognize our unity and shared commitment to building God’s Kingdom on earth. Together we help raise new leaders around the world who are equipped to be agents of change. Please encourage your congregation to give generously on October 6.
These resources will help you plan a worship service that has an integrated message highlighting how we are rooted in our connections as the body of Christ when we share in the sacrament of Holy Communion.
Available Resources
- Make sure that each person in your worship gathering receives a World Communion Sunday offering envelope and bulletin insert
- Include the order of worship with relevant liturgy designed to connect with the Scripture message while reinforcing the message of Christian unity through the celebration of World Communion Sunday
- Check out this sermon starter that challenges the congregation to explore the roots of our family tree as children of God. This message is a reminder that Holy Communion extends the table into worship spaces throughout the world and across generations
- Take time for a mission moment before the offering. This offering talk includes an example of a pastor who received World Communion Sunday funds for his education. He now serves and mentors others. The talk connects with the Scripture reading and builds on the sermon encouraging generous giving.
Also available are promotion and social media material, small-group resources, children’s resources, a comprehensive youth ministry plan, informational videos, devotional podcasts, a curated reading list, a video playlist, and inspirational smartphone wallpaper.
As you prepare for World Communion Sunday this year, invite the Holy Spirit to take root in your congregation. Remember the generations that have come before and rekindle the gift of God that is within you. Pray for the students who will receive scholarships and mentoring because of your congregation’s generosity.
