Spirit Church in New Orleans' 7th Ward offers line dance lessons in its 'canvas cathedral'

July 26, 2016
Residents of New Orleans’ 7th Ward recently received free line dancing classes with a well-known local instructor, “DJ Gravy,” thanks to an outreach program of The Spirit Church, a ministry of the Louisiana Annual Conference. Classes were held every Monday evening during the month of July, providing area residents the opportunity to get a great work out while gathering for fellowship with others in their community—and learning more about what The Spirit Church has to offer the 7th Ward. Young and old, alike, gathered at 2033 Law Street to step and kick under an open-air tent used for outdoor worship, and affectionately called the “canvas cathedral.”

“People passing by couldn’t help but notice the great music and enthusiastic dancing going on, and many stopped to see what all the excitement was about. This provided an excellent opportunity for church members to introduce themselves to the community, share the gospel, encourage one another and to lift up prayers for the needs and concerns of community members. Church members also made sure to let people know about upcoming worship services, bible studies, and the ‘Back to School Bash’ set for Saturday, August 6,” said Rev. Hadley Edwards, pastor for The Spirit Church.
The line dancing class (see video here) is just one of many ways that The Spirit Church “is serving as God’s hands, feet, boots and hearts on the ground," said Edwards, who is “especially excited” to celebrate The Spirit Church’s first baptism on Sunday, July 31. “Several professions of faith have been made, relationships are being built and the gospel is being shared… lives are being changed!,” he said.
