Important Information Regarding National Flood Insurance Program

October 19, 2021
There are about 8,000 expired National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) policies in Louisiana with about 6,000 of those in parishes and communities impacted by Hurricane Ida.
If your NFIP policy recently expired, ask your agent if you are still within a renewal grace period. You may be able to pay in full to renew and be covered for a loss during that time.
NFIP policies typically have a 30-day renewal grace period, but due to Hurricane Ida, FEMA extended the grace period from 30 days to 90 days for policies that have an expiration date between July 27, 2021, and September 26, 2021.
For example, for a policy insuring a property with a policy expiration date of:
Policyholders can be covered for a loss they face during that time period as long as the insurer receives their renewal payment before the grace period ends.
Policyholders should ask their agent if they are still within a renewal grace period.
Call your insurance agent or company to see if this applies to you. Or, if you can't remember who your policy is with, call the FEMA Flood Mapping & Insurance eXchange at 877-336-2627 to determine if your policy is within a renewal grace period.
Don't let your policy lapse, as you may lose discounts you were receiving.
Hurricane season is not yet over, and flooding can happen any time of the year.

- August 27, 2021 (within the extended renewal grace period date range), the NFIP insurer must receive the renewal premium payment on or before November 24, 2021 (90-day renewal grace period), to avoid a lapse in coverage.
- September 26, 2021 (the last day of the extended renewal grace period date range), the NFIP insurer must receive the renewal premium payment on or before December 24, 2021(90-day renewal grace period), to avoid a lapse in coverage.
- September 27, 2021 (after the extended renewal grace period date range), the NFIP insurer must receive the renewal premium payment on or before October 26, 2021 (30-day renewal grace period), to avoid a lapse in coverage.
