A Day of Thankful Giving

September 05, 2018
It's been over two years since the floods of 2016 in south Louisiana and a year since Hurricane Harvey and the Louisiana Conference has been diligently working cases from all across south Louisiana.

In the midst of work that continues, the Louisiana Conference Office of Missional Outreach and Engagement would like to invite everyone to the first-ever Day of Thankful Giving.

"This is a great time for us to be not only thankful for all we have," says Rev. Laraine Waughtal, Director of the Office of Missional Outreach and Engagement. It is also a time to say 'thank you' to all the people, businesses, churches, teams and survivors who have helped our brothers and sisters recover."

Waughtal is quick to add that the day is also a chance to thank the homeowners.

"Absolutely! Thank you for allowing us to work on your homes," she says. "This day is going to be fun, productive and worshipful. The Day of Thankful Giving is so very important because it allows us to show the love of Jesus to others. I see and hear it daily how people’s lives have been affected and impacted by the devastation of losing their home and everything they own that they have worked so hard for.
Mathew 25:40 says it best in as much as you have done it to one of the least of these my brothers, you have done it to me."

"I am so thankful to the hundreds of teams, churches and individuals who so willingly stepped in to help those in need following the floods of 2016 and again last year after Hurricane Harvey," says Bishop Cynthia Fierro Harvey. "So many gave generously of themselves and of their resources. We will celebrate their generosity and the hundreds of homeowners who opened their hearts and their homes to United Methodists from across the country. It is times like these that the light of Christ shines brilliantly and the United Methodist Church is at its best."

'Thank You!'

Sydney Thomas, a case manager with the Conference also knows the day will be as much about the work as it will be a chance to thank the homeowners. "This is important because it is a day that will recognize the challenges our clients have through," she says. "And, it validates their struggle."

"This will be like seeing life again after going through the peaks and valleys of wondering how one might make it through the journey," says Deborah Carrier, a case manager in the Lake Charles area who has managed multiple cases for the Office of Missional Outreach and Engagement. "Not only will the homeowner be able to look back but so will we - giving us the reassurance that we have been accountable with our service to the community. It is like seeing life for the very first time again after going through the peaks and valleys of wondering how I will make it through this journey and the reassurance that we have been accountable with our service to the community."

A Time to Rejoice

Join Bishop Cynthia Fierro Harvey, city officials, sponsors, volunteers, and homeowners as we rejoice with thankful hearts and celebrate the work that has been accomplished by thousands of volunteers over the past two years as South Louisiana continues to recover from the Floods of 2016 and Hurricane Harvey.

As it's often said 'Do all the good you can’ By all the means you can, In all the ways you can, In all the places you can, At all the times you can, To all the people you can, As long as you ever can.'
So we need to follow that example with our work.
Help repair as many as we can!
