Bishop Harvey Offers Appreciation for Louisiana Clergy

October 17, 2022

October is Clergy Appreciation Month.

Bishop Cynthia Fierro Harvey offers a letter of encouragement and appreciation, as she calls on clergy to acknowledge the busy and full season of Advent that is quickly approaching. "The Advent season is upon us, and I know the days will be full. Pace yourself and catch moments to reflect and prepare your mind, body, and soul."

Read the letter below and check out ways all of us can show appreciation for clergy in the Louisiana Conference.

Dear Beloved Clergy,

I write to you at the halfway point of Clergy Appreciation Month, hoping your congregations have showered you with tangible expressions of appreciation.

I wanted to extend my own expressions of thanksgiving to each of you. Leading a congregation today is no easy task and, indeed, not an easy calling.

Few have faced the challenges you have. You have endured pandemics, survived hurricanes, weathered floods, and stood up to racial injustice; you've navigated political and ecclesial unrest, as well as vocational unrest.

And you've done so with perseverance, dedication, and undeterred tenacity.

I pray that you will find a moment to pause and reset in the weeks to come. The Advent season is upon us, and I know the days will be full.

Pace yourself and catch moments to reflect and prepare your mind, body, and soul.

On November 29-30, we will gather for a clergy retreat that will offer you time to reconnect with colleagues, learn alongside one another, and, most importantly, lean into the grace given to you by the power of the Holy Spirit.

More on the Retreat

I heard recently that superheroes always look like regular people. I will add that in the Louisiana Conference, superheroes look like regular people in robes, clergy collars, reading Bibles, and standing on chancels week after week proclaiming the Good News of Jesus Christ.

I give thanks to God for each of you! I pray for you daily!

Grace and Peace,
Cynthia Fierro Harvey
