Listening Sessions

Bishop Harvey and the District Superintendents of the Louisiana Conference invite all interested persons to attend one of six listening sessions for an overview of the proposed legislation to be considered at the 2019 Special Session of the General Conference in St. Louis February 23-26, 2019.

There will be listening sessions in each of the six districts.

If you are clergy, under appointment, you are encouraged to attend the clergy listening session November 15th at Pineville United Methodist Church from 10am-2pm. Attendance is not required but we do ask clergy to register as we would like to get an accurate head count for lunch. This session is designed to consider the proposed plans as they relate to the clergy covenantal relationship.

At the Listening Sessions, Bishop Harvey will…

  • Provide a general overview of the report released from the 32-member Commission on a Way Forward
  • Provide a general overview of the plans that will be considered by delegates with a specific focus on the Council of Bishops recommended plan
  • Provide clarity on the process of what’s happening now as well as what processes will take place before and during the Called Session of General Conference 2019
  • Offer ideas how individuals and churches can discuss the issues facing the church

Given the purpose of the Listening Session, the primary focus will be centered on information and clarification of the process rather than discussions of biblical interpretations or theological debates on homosexuality.

You have an opportunity to submit a question for consideration which will help shape the presentation itself.

In preparation for the Listening Sessions you are encouraged to read the following report as well as the Mission, Vision and Scope of the Commission on a Way Forward. Additionally, you can order a copy of the book, Anatomy of Peace, used by the Commission for much of its work.

As additional information is made available we will notify you and provide access.

Below are dates and times of each listening session. Registration is not required.
