The Lake Charles District is offering two lay servant courses in-person on Saturday, June 26, 2021, from 8:30 am-3:00 pm at Newman United Methodist Church in Alexandria, LA.

The Basic course will be led by Mrs. Kattie Williams and the Advanced course on "Polity" will be led by the Lake Charles District Lay Servant Director, Ms. Toni Martin.
 

Lay Servant and Lay Speaking Policies

The information below is designed to help you understand the categories listed by sharing the requirements necessary to become so designated.

To become a Certified Lay Servant, one must:

  1. Be a professing and active member of a local church/charge.
  2. Obtain a recommendation from pastor and church council or charge conference.
  3. Complete the BASIC Course and one advanced course for Lay Servant Ministries.
  4. Have your qualifications reviewed by the district committee on Lay Servant Ministries and the annual charge conference.

To maintain status as a Certified Lay Servant, one must:

  1. Submit an annual report and renewal application to the charge conference and the committee on Lay Servant Ministries.
  2. Obtain a recommendation from pastor and charge conference.
  3. Complete an advanced course for Lay Servant Ministries at least once every three years.

To become certified as a Lay Speaker, one must:

  1. Be a professing and active member of a local church/charge.
  2. Obtain recommendation from pastor and charge conference.
  3. Complete the BASIC Course for Lay Servant Ministries.
  4. Complete a track of study to include: Discovering Spiritual Gifts, Leading Worship, Leading Prayer, Preaching, United Methodist Heritage, United Methodist Polity, and/or other courses as determined by the annual conference committee on Lay Servant Ministries or equivalent structure.
  5. Have your qualifications reviewed by the district committee on Lay Servant Ministries and the annual charge conference.

To maintain status as a Lay Speaker, one must:

  1. Submit an annual report and renewal application to the charge conference and the committee on Lay Servant Ministries.
  2. Receive endorsement of local church charge conference.
  3. Complete an advanced course for Lay Servant Ministries at least once every three years.

To become a Certified Lay Minister, one needs to complete the following requirements:

  1. Complete requirements to become a Certified Lay Servant or equivalent training as defined by district or conference.
  2. Complete Modules I – IV for Certified Lay Ministry or equivalent.
  3. Complete courses relevant to assignment.
  4. Demonstrate through service in local church an appreciation for the history, polity, doctrine, worship, and liturgy of The United Methodist Church
  5. Receive recommendation from district superintendent.
  6. Apply in writing to and meet with the District Committee on Ordained Ministry for review and approval at time of application and every two years thereafter.
  7. For recertification by District Committee on Ordained Ministry – undergo a ministry review by church council or charge conference, complete an approved continuing education event, receive again recommendation of district superintendent.
