The Theme

The theme “Making Disciples, Transforming the World,” which began in 2018, will continue at this year’s Annual Conference, as well as in 2020. The sub-theme for 2019 is “In Love,” with Romans 13:8-10 anchoring our call to love all of God’s people. We are called to make disciples and transform the world in love.

Dates

Annual Conference, scheduled for June 9-12, 2019, (Sunday - Wednesday) will take place at the Shreveport Convention Center. AC begins on Pentecost, June 9, thus our registration will have a festive feel, celebrating the birth of the Church, through the gift of the Holy Spirit. We invite you to a come-and-go Pentecost Opening Reception in the Pre-Function Area on Level 1 during registration. All delegates are required to bring a photo ID in order to register and receive your voting credentials. Please check the basic agenda enclosed in this Pre-Conference Report for more specific information on when and where registration will be held.

The App

The best way to stay connected is with our free Annual Conference App. It includes essential items such as the agenda, information about meals, as well as connections to the Conference’s various social media channels. Through push notifications and alerts, attendees may also receive real-time updates on conference news, changes in the schedule and various announcements. The app is available for download for Apple, Android, and all other internet-enabled mobile devices (search “Louisiana Annual Conference UMC” for the app).

The Schedule

You will find our schedule here and on the app. Annual Conference begins with the Clergy Session and Laity Session, held concurrently on Sunday, June 9, at 6:00 pm at the Shreveport Convention Center.

Worship

Opening worship, including the Episcopal Address and Holy Communion, will be held in the Convention Center, with pre-service music beginning at 8:45 am on Monday morning. The Celebration of Ministry, which includes Ordination, will be Monday evening at First UMC, Shreveport. A pre-service concert, featuring the FUMC Shreveport Choir, begins at 6:30 pm. The Celebration of Life Memorial Service, with Holy Communion and Rev. Linda Joseph preaching, will be held at the Convention Center on Tuesday morning at 9:00 am. Youth and young people from across Louisiana will lead worship on Wednesday morning at 8:00 am.

Offerings

We will have three special offerings during Annual Conference. The first offering, taken during Opening Worship Monday morning, is dedicated to Louisiana United Methodist Children and Family Services (“aka” LA Methodist Children’s Home). In keeping with tradition, the offering collected during the Celebration of Ministry (Ordination) Service on Monday night will scholarship our recent Ordinands on our Holy Land Tour. The Tuesday morning offering during the Celebration of Life Memorial Service will support the Louisiana Disaster Response Fund.

Worship Coordinator

Our Worship Coordinator is once again Rev. R. DeAndre Johnson. An ordained deacon, Rev. Johnson received his BM in sacred music degree from Centenary College and master of sacred music degree from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX. Originally from Shreveport, he is currently the pastor of music and worship life at Christ Church Sugar Land in Sugar Land, TX. Rev. Johnson has served as the worship leader at a number of denominational events, including the 2016 General Conference, and the GBHEM Exploration events in 2013 and 2017. We are excited to welcome DeAndre back this year.

Guest Speaker

Our guest speaker will be Rev. Dr. Gil Rendle, who is former senior vice president for the Texas Methodist Foundation as well as former senior consultant and director of consulting for the Alban Institute. As an ordained minister with a PhD in organizational and group dynamics, he has worked with congregations across denominations for more than thirty years. He is the author of a number of books, including Holy Conversations: Strategic Planning as Spiritual Practice for Congregations. His latest book is Quietly Courageous: Leading the Church in a Changing World. Rev. Dr. Rendle will speak at both the clergy and laity sessions and during the plenary sessions on Monday and Tuesday.

Business Session

Key highlights of our business sessions are the HealthCARE2020 changes being proposed to the health care benefit for clergy retirees, the election of General and Jurisdictional Conference delegates, and the adoption of the Conference budget. As in years past, there will be a breakout conversation for those interested in additional information on the Conference Finance and Administration Report held during lunch on Monday at the Convention Center Room 202. In the midst of our business sessions, Wesley Awards will once again be given to celebrate innovative ministry happening across our Conference. Read this Pre-Conference Report for additional reports and Annual Conference business. We invite all delegates, new and returning, to visit our website, www.la-umc.org/annualconference, to learn more about Annual Conference.
