Long Term Disaster Recovery Volunteer Coordinator, Louisiana Conference

The mission of the Long-Term Disaster Recovery for the Louisiana Conference is to provide relief and recovery for the survivors of the 2020 hurricane season in Louisiana. The Volunteer Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating the volunteer efforts for the program and will serve as the primary liaison to the volunteers.  

Duties and Responsibilities 

The Louisiana Conference will offer Case Management and Volunteer Management services to survivors of the 2020 hurricane season in Louisiana. We will partner with non-profit construction agencies providing disaster recovery services to repair and rebuild homes of the survivors.  The Volunteer Coordinator will work with those partner agencies to recruit, host and deploy volunteer teams for the job sites managed and supervised by the construction partners.  In addition, the Volunteer Coordinator will work with local churches to establish host sites where the volunteer teams will stay and will coordinate local volunteer efforts to support the volunteer teams.  

Responsibilities of the Volunteer Coordinator shall include, but not be limited to the following: 
  • Work with local churches and other agencies to establish and support host sites for the volunteers.
  • Recruit, schedule and organize local volunteers to support host site coordination and meal preparation for volunteers staying at our local host sites.
  • Recruit, schedule and organize volunteers from around the denomination to participate in the rebuild and repair job sites supervised and managed by our construction partners.
  • Recruit restaurants to give discounts to volunteer teams.
  • Encourage and equip all volunteer teams, from the registration and vetting process to final evaluation of their experience. 
  • Work with our construction partners to provide orientation for volunteers concerning policies and procedures and provide additional training as necessary. 
  • Establish and maintain contact with teams once they are assigned to a job site. 
  • Understand the process and work of the ministry in order to answer any questions from the volunteers. 
  • Check on volunteer teams during their stay. 
  • Provide the completed Volunteer Skills Assessment sheet to our construction partners.
  • Consider the overall well-being of volunteers. 
  • Maintain communication with existing volunteers, ensuring they feel appreciated.   
  • Write articles to keep the Conference and our volunteers informed about the Louisiana Conference Disaster Recovery and additional volunteer opportunities.
  • Collect all team documents; prepare and submit accident reports. 
  • Communicate regularly with the Program Coordinator.
  • Maintain volunteer files.
  • Keep record of volunteer hours and demographics, report monthly to the Recovery Coordinator.
  • Other duties as determined by the Recovery Coordinator.

Skills and Knowledge 

The Volunteer Coordinator is required to have: 
  • A positive attitude and willingness to equip and encourage co-workers and volunteers.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. 
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, and other software used by the Long-Term Recovery team.
  • A willingness to learn new technology and software.
  • Experience working with volunteer teams. 
  • Excellent people skills – especially patience and understanding of volunteer capabilities and limitations. 
  • Creativity and problem-solving skills. 
  • The ability to set priorities and exercise flexibility where necessary. 
  • The interpersonal skills to take and receive direction from others.
  • The willingness to accept other job responsibilities as needed. 
  • A willingness to understand, operate within, and communicate “Best Practices” of our Disaster Recovery program.

Experience and Competencies 

A Bachelor’s degree or commensurate job experience is required. Completion of the Volunteers in Mission Leadership training is strongly preferred.


The Volunteer Coordinator will report directly to the Program Coordinator.  

Availability and Terms of Position and Compensation

This position is available immediately and applications will be received until the position is filled. This position is a temporary, full-time, and hourly. No benefits will be provided. Mileage to host sites is paid at IRS rates. 

Our Conference is an at-will employer which means that either the employee or the Conference may terminate the employment relationship at any time for any reason, with or without cause or notice. 

Work Schedule and Hours 

The Volunteer Coordinator serves as part of the professional program staff of the Louisiana Conference of the United Methodist Church. This job is 40 hours a week and some weekends will be required. Flex hours are allowed due to the nature of the job.
