Over the centuries, God's children have come together in worship.  While the basic principles remain the same, we find that different people reach out to God in different ways.

The form of worship we call traditional developed in the mid 1900s. It features a liturgy (order of worship) that includes hymns, affirmations of faith, prayers, and a sermon. Many of today's United Methodists grew up with this style of worship and still prefer that worship setting.

Around the 1970s, a type of worship developed in some non-denominational churches that became known as contemporary. It featured less liturgy and music that was more recently written. Contemporary services are more likely to utilize technology such as song lyric projection. Over the years, some United Methodist churches have adopted this approach to worship. In some cases, a blended form of contemporary and traditional worship is used.

By the end of the century, another form of worship arose ... emerging worship. A definition for emerging worship can be just as elusive as a definition for contemporary worship. Emerging worship tries to draw from all elements of mankind. It brings elements of the ancient church together with the church today. It may emphasize artistic expression. It is more unstructured than traditional and even contemporary services.
