Louisiana Tech Wesley Foundation holds golf tournament fundraiser to support LAVIM missions

February 26, 2015

On April 11, the Wesley Foundation for Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, La. will host a golf tournament designed to raise funds for missions to Haiti, San Francisco and other destinations. The event will be held at Trails End Golf Course in Arcadia, and will begin with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.

Supporting or participating in this tournament (see more at http://www.latechwesley.org/golf-tournament/) will help to fund missional efforts that are changing and saving lives.

For the past three summers, Louisiana Volunteers in Mission teams from Louisiana Tech’s Wesley Foundation have worked in Haiti to help restore and to build schools, churches, docks and latrines. They have provided community meals, Vacation Bible Schools, and aid in local medical and dental clinics. A team of 15 students from The Wesley Foundation will serve in Haiti again this summer, and will be partnering with Engineers Without Borders at Louisiana Tech, Louisiana Volunteers in Mission and United Methodist Committee on Relief to restore a water desalination system lying in ruins in the heart of the village of Sous A Philippe, Haiti.

The water system once produced 120 gallons of purified water daily. But a few decades ago, the system came crashing down after a stampede of cows pushed past the wall and smashed every piece of glass, pipes and insulation. Now, the system lays cracked and dry, filled with salt, weeds, bees and broken glass. The community of Sous A Philippe relies on a large cistern that collects rain water, which is nearly empty in the ongoing drought. Even when the cistern is full, it is ridden with parasites and bacteria.

When they can afford it, most of the villagers use this polluted water for drinking, cooking and cleaning. As a result, most of the villagers suffer from dehydration and malnourishment. The Wesley Foundation along with Engineers Without Borders are focusing our efforts to restore and improve that water desalination system for the people of Haiti.

This summer’s mission team of 15 will be serving May 24-June 22; the Engineers Without Borders team of around 10 students will be joining them for 10 days. While there, the Wesley Foundation team will also provide weekly community meals, daily VBS, young adult bible studies and medical clinics.
