History of the Scholarship
In 1950, the Howard L. Daughenbaugh Memorial Scholarship was established by the Board of Laity of the Louisiana Conference of The United Methodist Church to aid young people enrolled full time at Centenary College or Dillard University in the pursuit of careers in Christian education and service. In 1982, the Thomas H. Matheny Scholarship increased educational opportunities for United Methodists in the conference. Both funds were named to honor outstanding Conference Lay Leaders. In 1987, these two funds were combined to help better prepare tomorrow's Methodist Church leaders.

Why Support This Fund?
There is a pressing need throughout The United Methodist Church of Louisiana for competent leaders in many fields, and especially in Christian education. Individuals, groups, and our churches supporting this fund enable recipients to receive an education that will prepare them for a vocation in the church or to serve the church as laity. Your support of this scholarship fund is an investment in the future ministry of the United Methodist Church.

How to Apply
All applicants must be residents of Louisiana, current members of The Louisiana United Methodist Church and attending or planning to attend one of Louisiana's two Methodist institutions of higher education: Centenary College or Dillard University. Candidacy for the awards is open to high school seniors and college students who have at least a 2.5 grade point average. A completed application form, accompanied by a letter of recommendation from a school principal, teacher, guidance counselor, or church pastor, must be received by March 1. Scholarships are awarded on a yearly basis, for a maximum of four years, on the basis of scholarship, service, and need. A personal interview is required as part of the application process for the first two years of the award. After that, previous recipients need only fill out an application form accompanied by a letter of reference from a teacher or pastor.

Application forms should be mailed to:

2006 Report

The Daughenbaugh-Matheny Scholarship Fund can celebrate the faithfulness and accomplishments of our District leaders.  They have been creative in applying new and innovative methods of raising funds for our scholarship program.  One idea that is currently being explored is working with the Council on Finance and Administration to determine if we can get a designated Sunday with offering to support our scholarship fund.

In addition, we can celebrate, under the leadership of our former Chairperson, Dr. Sarah Kreutziger, new brochures and an updated website.  Dr. Kreutziger has been very helpful with transition to a new chairperson.

Our goals for 2006-2007 are:

  1. Publicize the scholarship in each District.
  2. Continue to look for new ways to raise funds.
  3. Raise the endowment each year.
  4. Increase the number of scholarships.

The challenges before us are reflected in our goals.  Hurricane Katrina created new challenges for us.  Last year, we lost all of our Dillard students because of the storm.  One out of nine students returned to Dillard for the second semester.  The challenge is great. We will continue to work with Dillard University as they continue to recover.  We solicit your continued prayers and support as we work through this great challenge.

We will continue with this important work because we know this is God's work.  We know success will come because we are blessed with great leaders in all of our districts. They have all gone beyond the call to duty and for that we are grateful.  Please continue to pray for us and help us tell others about the opportunity to train our young people for leadership roles in our church community.
