Individuals
1. Develop a plan with variables for the location and strength of an incoming hurricane.
- At what strength level will you evacuate?
- What projected hurricane paths will require an evactuation?
- How soon will you leave?
- What needs to be done if you stay?
- What needs to be done if you evacuate?
2. Create a disaster supply and evacuation kits.
- If you are staying:
A disaster kit will have supplies if you intend to remain at home.
Have at least 3 days of food.
- If you are evacuating:
You should also prepare materials to take if you evacuate.
Let people know where you are going and how to contact you.
3. Determine an evacuation destination and route.
- Where will you go to evacuate?
a. Family or friends out of harm's way
b. Hotel: you may want to make reservations early on or you won't find a room for hundreds of miles
- If you think the main roads will be jammed, are there alternate routes along minor roads. Be sure to get detailed maps. |
Local Church
1. Develop a phone tree to check on members as a storm is approaching. It would be good to get information such as are they staying (and are supplies needed) or evacuating (and the location/phone numbers of their evacuation destinations if known).
2. For shut-ins or those with special needs, other members can volunteer to take care of them with supplies, evacuation transportation, etc.
3. Create a method of communications. This could be a phone number or website (based outside of the area) where members can check in. |
