Hurricane Preparedness Week - May 24-30

We now know more definitively that it only takes O-N-E to spell D-I-S-A-S-T-E-R!! This is especially true as we look back at The Storms of the Summer of ‘05-Katrina and Rita. This piece will only remind us that the need for preparation is always imminent. The sites that are quite helpful in developing plans are numerous. To look at Louisiana’s preparedness data, simply navigate to www.ohsep.louisiana.gov where items such as mitigation, hazards, Citizen Corps, to name a few are readily available to download.

YOUR EVACUATION PLAN should be at the ready with preparations including a “grab and Go” scenario in place.

  • Medical supplies: prescription medications and dentures
  • Disaster supplies: flashlight, batteries, radio, first aid kit, bottled water.
  • Clothing and bedding: a change of clothes and a sleeping bag or bedroll and pillow for each household member
  • Car keys and keys to the place you may be going( friend’s or relative’s home)

There are important papers to take with you in the event that you have to evacuate.

  • Driver’s license or personal identification
  • Social Security card
  • Proof of residence (deed or lease)
  • Insurance papers
  • Birth and marriage certificates
  • Stocks, bonds, and other negotiable certificates
  • Wills deeds, and copies of recent tax return

On the www.ohsep.louisiana.gov, the Parish Emergency Preparedness Offices Contacts Directory will give you the necessary data to contact the respective officer for your particular area.

Another site for us in Louisiana is www.Louisianafloods.org where vital information regarding the preparation for floods and how to function efficiently in the event of a flood.

The point is to bear in mind that it could happen to YOU, a family member or a friend.

Shalom on The Way!

Freddie C. Henderson, Director
Disaster Preparedness

Rev. Freddie Henderson serves as Disaster Preparedness Director for the Louisiana Annual Conference. Henderson most recently served the conference as Superintendent for the New Orleans District, hard hit by Hurricane Katrina. He spent nine months working intensely with local churches in the New Orleans area whose facilities were either damaged or destroyed, and whose congregations were severely affected by the diaspora of its members to other parts of the state and throughout the country. Henderson now coordinates conference efforts to keep the state prepared for future disasters, critical in an area prone to hurricanes and heavily populated by industrial plants and factories.
