Thomas Merton on Ambition and the Self

I love Thomas Merton. I became a fan years ago and spent several years of regular sojourns to the monastary he called home. One of the best places I know to take a Sabbath is at the Abbey of Gethsemane. I few months back I found this quote and decided it needed to be saved. I read it almost every day and think about it.

Finally, I am coming to the conclusion that my highest ambition is to be what I already am. That I will never fulfill my obligation to surpass myself unless I first accept myself and, if I accept myselfy fully in the right way, I will already have surpassed myself. For it is the unaccepted self that stands in my way and will continue to do so as long as it is not accepted.

Good words for those who struggle with ambition and acceptatance. We will only be satisfied when we dwell fully in the person that God has made and God is perfecting in Holy Love.
